The Big Island Hawaii is by far the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. At 4.030 sq. miles, its land mass is greater than all the other Hawaii Islands combined, and is still growing thanks to its active volcanoes! The Big Island is also the most diverse of the Hawaii Islands and the only one you would need to stay in two places to see all the attractions.
Big Island travel centres on exploring its wild landscapes, from the volcanic activity of Volcano National Park in the south, the beautiful sweeping beaches hemmed in by barren volcanic landscape on the west coast around Kohala, the remote tropical wilderness of Waipio in the north, the lush valleys and waterfalls in the east and the snow-capped barren mountains of Mauna Kea in its centre.
There are two main airports - at Kailua Town on the dry west coast and at Hilo Town, the working town and port on the wet tropical east coast. Both are about 55 minutes flight from Oahu with hourly flights (6am to 7pm) and several connecting flights each day via Maui. The flight from Hilo to Kailua is 15 minutes, but it would take 5 hours by car.
Our guide is full of pictures and maps to give you a clear impression of the region. We also provide useful links throughout our text so you can find out more about tours and accommodation and make reservations.
